Lanarkshire
Philatelic Society
40th Anniversary
Dinner
Last Friday, 28th
September, for the 40th Anniversary of the Lanarkshire Philatelic Society
(founded in Hamilton in 1967) members, friends and Special Guests gathered in
the Bentley Hotel in Motherwell to celebrate with a special Anniversary Dinner.
This year's President, Mrs Ellen W. Currie, who hails from Motherwell,
gave a very warm welcome to Douglas Owens, the son of the very first President
of the Society, Robert (Bobby) Owens, and also to Willie King, a Fellow of
the Royal Philatelic Society of London, who is from Dundonald, Ayrshire.
He is also President of the Association of Scottish Philatelic Societies and
brought congratulations to the 'Lanarkshire' from the member Societies.
The specially decorated cake was cut by Mrs Currie, aided by Honorary President,
Ken Norris.
There was some considerable laughter heard as members looked at the
various photographs from the archives and remembered the days when they had hair
- and curls (instead of none), had dark hair (instead of grey), and looked
wonderfully younger!
The Society caters for all collectors' interests - countries, thematics,
postal history, as well as an increasing interest in 'Cinderella' material.
A well-stocked library, and an Exchange Packet system gives much help to both
new and experienced collectors.
A website has been set up and is well maintained by Andy Napier and
gives much useful information, accounts of all the Displays and Exhibitions,
members' web pages and has links to various other helpful websites - at www.lanarkshireps.co.uk
Meetings are on alternate Fridays in St Andrews Church Hall, Avon Street
from September to May. Further information can be found in the website or
by e-mail to Paul McGowan, secretary@lanarkshireps.co.uk
or telephone 01698 426289.
